Meet Jeremy Thao, a Very Asian filmmaker

Jeremy Thao is a Hmong American director in Atlanta, working to pave his own path in the Southeast’s burgeoning film scene in Georgia. Though he’s worked in the film community for several years, he was recently awarded a grant to bring his own short film to life. “Wokman” is now a passion project curently seeking support through crowdfunding with the hopes of sharing Thao’s relationship with food in his debut movie.

Let’s help him get to his goal through his Seed and Spark campaign! It ends Wednesday night, June 22.

We wanted Jeremy to share his thoughts in his own words:

Since the Very Asian Foundation aims to amplify diverse AAPI voices, I wanted to share about my upcoming short film titled, “Wokman.”

“Wokman” is a semi-autobiographical short film based in 1998, sharing a day in the life of the Li family, an immigrant Chinese family running their restaurant, China Wok. The protagonist is Andy, a 10-year-old American-born Chinese kid, and we see some of his first experiences working the cash register and answering phones.

Andy is representative of myself and is a major tool in how I’m making this movie to explain to the world and to myself why I am the way that I am, after growing up Asian American in the ‘90s. “Wokman” is also a love letter to my parents, by showing them that the sacrifices they’ve made and the hardships they’ve endured for our family have helped create art that shines a beautiful light upon the AAPI community.

It looks like Jeremy is going to get the funds he needs, but let’s push him over the edge a little more! Spread the love and the word!
